Mossline — allotment notes from plot 12 Field notes on growing, compost, and the slow repair of clay soil.

Tomato troubles, week by week

The honest tally

Six plants, three varieties, one mediocre season. Keeping the numbers is the only way to lie less next year.

Week 23 — early blight

Lower leaves yellowing on the shelldon row. Stripped and binned, not composted — the bin heaps don't reliably get hot enough anymore.

Week 27 — blossom-end rot

Four fruits on the paste tomatoes. Irregular watering, mine, not the weather's. Mulch added; mulch should have been there in May.

Week 34 — the tally

11.4kg total. The cherry row out-produced everything per metre, as it does every year, as I forget every spring.
